Zach Steel – 1978

“1978 – Superman could use his legs, everything was great. Fuckin around in the Middle East – stabbing backs, spreading the beast”

These days it’s pretty much impossible for me to watch a movie or a show without picking up the phone and diving in to the #rabbithole that is #wikipedia = my favorite site on the webs. Back in #2005 I did just that while watching #richarddonner’s #superman. I saw it was released in #1978, and I started writing a song. #liketahearithereitgo #zachsteel #steelfunk #youllbelieveamancanfly #paraplegia #christopherreeve #georgereeves

Zach Steel – Halfway

Download on Soundcloud.

This is the first song I wrote via my one-man-band live looping set-up, back around #2009 I think. #halfway #zachsteel

Well my mind’s a mess, my body’s range of motion, you know it’s hurting me so badly
I can’t stop thinking bout those things that you said, you know you almost had me
Like a storm that rages late in the night, but never sees the light of day
I had a dream you were yelling at me, I was excited you had something to say
it was a treat to feel halfway to being ok.
Well I can’t stop thinking you know I’m thinking about, it’s like a spell that I’m under
I could lose it at any moment, another time bomb blunder
So I, lock myself away in this room, and write these songs and I wonder
Why you’d want me to be, the kind of guy that always plays it so cool, pretend I don’t feel this thunder
And I know, that I should take it lightly but, it feels so dire some times
The things I used to think were cool have, lost their appeal like nursery rhymes
In this town so unaccountable for so many crimes.
And you’ve been feeling lies
Like a robot on its wedding day
Sometimes you wonder why
But the knowledge it’s not worth the pain
And if I wasn’t there, would you pretend that you still don’t care
So I’m gonna hang on.
Hatin myself for doing the right thing, and going to work every day
Spend my free time stable as lightning, thinking its worth if you like it this way
And the heroes of the masses don’t mean nothing to me, selling things I used to get for free
Searching for something that makes a difference for me.

“The rich have extiguished every single point of view. Every day we give birth to more and more who’ll never have a clue.”

One of my top 5 favorite bands is #motorhead. Before I heard them, I had never heard double bass drumming like that, and that shit blew my mind. When I realized that #yutaka could play that style, I drove myself nuts trying to write a song in that style. Eventually I had a moment of clarity and realized that there was an acoustic song I had already written years before that was the perfect fit: #1203 – #twofortuesday #hardrock #metal #OGsteel #lemmy #zachsteel

“Wear your tight clothes to do those dirty deeds. We’ll eat up those videos that are as tasteless as MSG.”

Gonna throw a little #twofortuesday action at you #kz106 style. I’m going to post two versions of the same song – this first one is the original #acoustic version fo the tune that I wrote in #tennessee while I was working in the dead of winter as a #roofer to save up money to move to #CA. I looked at a digital clock and saw #1203 and I was off to the races. I intended this to be an #empowering song for women…now that I am older and still living in a world where its #allaboutthatbass and #anaconda I can see clearly why this tune didn’t set the world on fire. Next I’ll post the #STEEL / #metal version. #zachsteel

Thanks to @norwoodsteel the unofficial #zachsteel back catalog #curator this track has not been lost forever. I do not remember writing this, I do not remember recording this, but its me, and contains a lyric that had to make me smile: “when she kissed me – oh lord – I felt like a #templeofdoom Harrison Ford yeah yeah” …Produced, arranged, composed, and performed by Zach Steel #likeit

My cover of the 1962 classic performed by The Crystals, produced by Phil Spector and written by Gene Pitney. All sounds on this recording were arranged, performed and produced by myself in a studio apartment in Korea Town, Los Angeles around 2006.

Zach Steel – Explosion

My best Desmond Child imitation as far as the production. Also a heavy dose of influence from Alice Cooper’s Poison album. Recorded by Travis Greene in Northridge, CA around 2007 I think. Could have also been recorded by Mista John Montgomery in Echo Park, CA around that time. Drums performed by Yutaka Ichinayagi and bass by Satoshi Ichinayagi. Words, music, guitar and vocals by Zach Steel.

Show – O’Brien’s on Main st. 5/24/13
